Overview

The southerrn area of Cheras that borders Kajang has been popularly renamed as Cheras Selatan (also known as Balakong) after the opening of the then Jusco Cheras Selatan in 2016 and the rapidly outward gowth of residential areas around the Kuala Lumpur City Centre. Cheras Selatan is about 15 minutes away and next to Bandar Sungai Long.

Accessibility and Transportation

Since then, this predominantly Chinese and self-sustainable township has its own commercial, retail and residential facilities. It is highly accessible via the SILK, Grand Saga Cheras-Kajang Highway, LEKAS, Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road and the upcoming MRT line with stations in Bandar Tun Husseina and Balakong. Existing public transport is via the Star LRT line with stops in Cheras and Maluri and KTM Serdang stations.

Amenities and Facilities

Key retail facilities include Aeon Cheras Selatan, Cheras Leisure Mall, Mines Capital Mall, Aeon Big, Cheras Central Mall and also Giant. As of leisure activities, there is Selangor Turf Club for racing enthusiasts, along with Palace of the Golden Horses, a hotel located within Mines Resort City. Cheras South is the home of two international schools, Australian International School Malaysia and Alice Smith School. As for local schools, there are three schools situated within Bandar Tun Hussein Onn: Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Tun Hussein Onn 2 and Sekolah Menengah Bandar Tun Hussein Onn. For higher education, there is a nursing and health science college Masterskills located right inside Mahkota Walk in Bandar Mahkota Cheras.

Property Developments

Earlier developments were mostly landed low and medium cost homes catered to the workers of the local factories in Balakong. Since, then newer projects like Livia Residence - one of the most expensive non-landed serviced apartments , Mahkota Residence and Suria Court have alleviated property prices of existing projects and attracted newer amenities and a growth in the younger demographic segment whom grew up in the nearby older areas prefer to live here to start their own families.
